Rockford PAC Endorses Candidates for Rock Valley College Board of Trustees
March 14, 2019
The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC (Rockford PAC) today announced its support for Rock Valley College (RVC) Board of Trustees candidates. In the upcoming April 2nd election, there are four open seats on the RVC Board, and Rockford PAC has made endorsements for the four open seats.
The upcoming election will determine the majority for the seven-member Rock Valley College Board of Trustees. Rockford PAC supports the current direction of the college and recommends that Patrick Murphy and Lynn Kearney be retained to continue the significant work they have begun. We commend the college for its enhanced collaboration with the K-12 school systems and for the decision to join other partners in launching Colman Village – where economic and workforce development will be emphasized and cultivated. We also believe the experience and values of Jarid Funderburg and Gloria Cudia prepare them to make important contributions to the progress currently underway at our community college.
The following are endorsed:
Lynn Kearney – 6-Year Seat
Lynn Kearney is the current RVC Board Chairperson and has served as a trustee since 2013. During her tenure, the college has established financial stability despite the challenges presented by the state budget crisis. As an RVC graduate and retired teacher, Lynn brings an educator’s perspective to the RVC Board. Lynn credits her father, an RVC professor, for instilling in her “the importance of hard work, advocating for your community, and the transformative power of education.”
Gloria Cardenas Cudia – 6-Year Seat
Gloria Cardenas Cudia is an experienced civic leader who has helped foster diverse participation in educational and business opportunities throughout the region. Her experience includes service as a commissioner for the Rockford Park District, and as a member of the Rockford School Board. We believe her strong work ethic, her commitment to entrepreneurialism, and her leadership within the local Hispanic community will make her a uniquely important voice on the RVC Board of Trustees.
Jarid Funderburg – 6-Year Seat
Jarid Funderburg is a former RVC Trustee and possesses a deep knowledge of the region’s economic conditions and opportunities. His work experience affords him insight in the building trades, philanthropy and economic development. He currently is engaged with regional employers to grow our area’s economy. Jarid’s board experience and understanding of our region will be a great addition to the RVC Board.
Patrick Murphy – 2-Year Seat
Patrick Murphy is a past RVC Board Chairperson and has served as a trustee since 2013. As an entrepreneur who founded a small business focused on today’s manufacturing, Patrick Murphy understands the important link of relevant education and employment opportunities. Patrick’s experience makes him a subject matter expert within the advanced manufacturing sector. He is an active supporter of programs and initiatives throughout the RVC campus. He’s a true student advocate.
Rockford PAC commends all candidates for their willingness to serve our community’s college. We encourage RVC leaders to build upon their interest in educational excellence through continued involvement with these individuals.

Rockford PAC Announces Endorsements for March 20 Primary
February 22, 2018
The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC announced today its endorsement of the ballot initiative and candidates for the March 20th primary races. The mission of the Rockford Regional Good Government Political Action Committee (Rockford PAC) is to help foster political transformation by supporting candidates who commit to ethical, accountable and transparent government and to support initiatives that align with our community's vision and values. Candidates were evaluated on their experience, ability to communicate their positions and knowledge of a broad array of issues facing the county government, community and the offices they seek.
We appreciate the time that all candidates provided in meeting with the Rockford PAC Board members and in submitting their information. Through our numerous interviews it became apparent that there is an absence of a comprehensive strategic plan and effective process for operating the county’s business. We view this as a handicap that encumbers collaboration among elected officials and hinders efficient performance of departments charged with serving local residents. The recent budget development highlighted the challenges faced when strong communication, planning and process are absent or not known and understood.
We challenge all county officials to embrace best practices and to rely on the most accurate financial information available for decision making. We also encourage their support for policies and initiatives that align with helping advance our region’s goal to become a Top 25 community.
The following are endorsed:
Referendum: Consolidation of the offices of Winnebago County Clerk and Recorder of Deeds is endorsed
Winnebago County Sheriff: Gary Caruana is endorsed
Winnebago County Clerk: Lori Gummow is endorsed
Winnebago County Board, District Two: No endorsement
Winnebago County Board, District Four: David Boomer is endorsed
Winnebago County Board, District Seven: Paul Arena is endorsed
Winnebago County Board, District Eight: John Butitta is endorsed

Rockford PAC Announces Endorsement of Home Rule Initiative
February 1, 2018
Rockford: The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC (Rockford PAC), an organization that advocates for best practices and good ethics in local government, has thrown its support behind the Our Decisions, Our Solutions campaign. The campaign effort seeks passage of the March 20th ballot initiative to restore home rule authority to the city of Rockford.
The Board of Rockford PAC unanimously voted in support of returning local control over local matters, and reducing the need to rely on the state government to decide Rockford’s future. The group cited the ability to better enable flexibility in managing fiscal challenges, enhance economic competitiveness for the region, and improve the quality of life for our citizens.
“Restoring home rule authority will add a critical tool to our ability to enact local policies and advance projects that improve the health and prosperity of our community,” said Peter Provenzano, Rockford PAC Chairman of the Board.
Additionally, the group said that bringing home rule authority to the city of Rockford will allow local leaders to implement measures that improve public safety. For example, the city will be better able to address issues such as abandoned properties that breed crime.
As part of the endorsement, Rockford PAC contributed $5000 to the campaign effort to help get the message out to citizens about the benefits of home rule. The organization believes it is important to provide the resources necessary to educate voters on this important ballot initiative and encourages other organizations and individuals to also contribute financial support for the effort.

Rockford PAC announces Endorsements for Loves Park Mayor, and Rock Valley College Trustees
March 28, 2017
Rockford: The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC is announcing their endorsement for Loves Park Mayor, and Rock Valley College Trustees. The election will be held on April 4, 2017 in the consolidated election. Candidates submitted questionnaires and participated in an interview process. Voting records and other public information were utilized in a very thorough process.
The following candidates are endorsed:
Greg Jury, City of Loves Park, Mayor.
Greg Jury is no stranger to Loves Park government. He’s long represented the first ward as its alderman, working hand-in-hand with administration officials in their efforts to provide seamless city services and facilitate positive growth. Greg has the endorsement of retiring Mayor Darryl Lindberg, and if elected, he promises to carry on in his tradition. We support that. Mayor Lindberg has been a popular and effective mayor since his election in 1997. We also appreciate Greg’s stated desire to further bolster economic development within the city. He has a record of supporting important economic development projects, like the Woodward facility and Rockford Park District’s Sportscore II, which shows us he is committed to that pledge. He’s a smart, pragmatic leader who also has the support of the majority of the current Loves Park City Council. We think his ability to build coalitions around positive initiatives will be an asset for the citizens he hopes to serve. Finally, we believe in his commitment to regionalism. State and local budget constraints have made it increasingly important for our local leaders to work together whenever possible. It makes good fiscal sense to create economies through cooperation, and we all know that economic development is not confined by political boundaries. Regionalism is the order of the day, and Greg understands that simple truth. His proven leadership on the city council, coupled with a clear vision for improving Loves Park and the surrounding region make him the clear choice. We urge Loves Park voters to elect Greg Jury as Mayor of the City of Loves Park.
Marlana Dokken, Jennifer Ray, and Neeley Erickson for Rock Valley College Board of Trustees.
Marlana Dokken and Jennifer Ray are newcomers to political office. Neeley Erickson has valuable experience in state and local government. They all share a deep commitment to make Rock Valley College (RVC) one of the best community colleges in Illinois. We like that these candidates have attempted to hear from all sides in learning and understanding the issues that are critical to moving RVC forward and that they pledge to work with the faculty and administration on behalf of the best interest of the students and taxpayers. They all three strongly support the liberal arts tradition of Rock Valley College, but also understand the importance of the career and technical education (CTE) offerings of the college. If the Rockford region is to become a top 25 community we must have an educated and skilled workforce to fill good paying positions in local industry and a community college plays a large role in that endeavor. The new NIU-RVC engineering program is a great example of a public-private partnership that allows students to get a four year engineering degree without ever leaving the Rock Valley College campus. Much of this program is being funded by local industry led by the RVC Foundation. These three candidates support this type of collaboration that helps improve our region and grows enrollment at RVC. We urge voters to choose Marlana Dokken, Jennifer Ray and Neeley Erickson for RVC Board of Trustees.

Rockford PAC announces Endorsements for City Council races on April 4th
March 24, 2017
Rockford: The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC is announcing their endorsement for City Council races in Rockford. The election will be held on April 4, 2017 in the consolidated election. Candidates submitted questionnaires and participated in an interview process. Voting records and other public information were utilized in a very thorough process.
The following candidates are endorsed:
Jamie Getchius (R) for Rockford City Council, 2nd Ward. It’s important to have smart people serve in government, that’s why Alderman Jamie Getchius is a great asset to the Rockford City Council and the 2nd Ward. Alderman Getchius is an engineer by training with a degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and he knows how to assess and understand complicated issues that sometimes come before the council. While only in his first term, Alderman Getchius has been a strong proponent of economic development projects that help bring economic growth and jobs to the community while also being a fiscally responsible steward of taxpayer dollars. Alderman Getchius takes care of the needs of his ward by helping secure funding for initiatives like the Keith Creek Flood control project and much needed street repairs throughout the 2nd Ward. Alderman Getchius has demonstrated strong leadership abilities on the Council by speaking out on sometimes controversial issues. The 2nd Ward needs an experienced leader on the council like Alderman Jamie Getchius and he is strongly endorsed.
Chad Tuneberg (R) for Rockford City Council, 3rd Ward. Chad Tuneberg is a living example of exactly the kind of people we need more of coming back to Rockford. Chad was born and raised in Rockford and graduated from Guilford High School. He moved to Chicago after college and helped revitalize neighborhoods there. He and his wife, Leah, decided to come back to his hometown to raise their family and help make a difference in the community. Since coming back to Rockford, Chad has volunteered in many organizations and has been a strong supporter of revitalizing our downtown. Chad has a strong background in financial management and is the founder of his own financial management business. Now he wants to use his talent and experience to serve in an official capacity representing the 3rd Ward on the City Council. Although he is running as a Republican, Chad understands there is no partisan way to fix a pothole. We like that he supports non-partisan elections. He is experienced in economic development and knows how to work with state and federal leaders to advance issues. Chad is a “boomerang” that can help Rockford become a world-class community. We are excited to endorse Chad Tuneberg.
Change is needed in the 10th Ward.
Jim Hughes, the democratic candidate running in the 10th Ward, says he is running because the 10th Ward needs new direction and new leadership. Dyanna Walker, the independent candidate, doesn’t believe that the Ward is being represented as effectively as it could be. We agree with Jim and Dyanna, and believe either would better serve the 10th Ward than the incumbent Frank Beach. Frank Beach has represented the ward for 36 years. He should be a strong leader on the city council, a mentor to newer members and a dependable source of institutional wisdom. Instead, he regularly appears ill-informed and uncertain. We feel he lacks the leadership and vision someone of his rank should exude. Beach has opposed major economic development projects such as the UW Sports Factory which is now boosting tourism and several local tax revenue streams. We like that Hughes pledges to serve only one four-year term. We also like Dyanna Walker's engagement with initiatives to improve the community and she pledges to represent the interest of the entire 10th Ward and our whole community.
John Beck (R) for Rockford City Council, 12th Ward. Plain and simple, the Rockford City Council, the 12th Ward and the City of Rockford needs Alderman John Beck to be re-elected on April 4. Alderman Beck is an experienced, stabilizing and consistent leader on a somewhat dysfunctional council. His common sense approach to city issues and leadership has benefitted the Rockford community and the 12th Ward. Beck has been a strong supporter of economic development for the 12th Ward and was instrumental in helping advance the new North End City Market which is growing in the number of visitors each year. Beck keeps in constant touch with residents of the 12th Ward providing important information on various issues and receiving input on the needs of the neighborhoods. Alderman Beck has served as a strong advocate for the 12th Ward and the entire community. Alderman John Beck is strongly endorsed for re-election.
Note: The board chose not to make endorsements in the races in Ward 6, nor Ward 9.
Note: The City of Rockford has eight years to become a top 25 city. This is not a long time and we need a change in the 10th Ward to help get things moving in the right direction.

Rockford: The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC is announcing the name of the Mayoral candidate endorsed by the Board of the organization. Candidates submitted questionnaires and participated in an interview process. Voting records and other public information were utilized in a very thorough process.
The following candidate is endorsed:
Tom McNamara (D) for Mayor of Rockford.
Our community has much opportunity before it. Our residents have created a plan to achieve our community’s vision to become a top 25 city in the next 8 years. To achieve this vision will require bold leadership and an aligned community. Rockford’s next Mayor must be skilled at convening the resources required to execute our plans and achieve our vision. Resources come in many forms and from a variety of sources. To succeed, our next Mayor must be capable of assembling and harnessing local, state and national knowledge, expertise, and funding. Our next Mayor must have a sense of urgency in this regard. Moving swiftly will require the collective and decisive action of the Mayor’s administration and our City Council. We believe Tom McNamara is best suited to provide this necessary leadership, and we unanimously endorse him for Mayor of Rockford.
Tom McNamara was born and raised in Rockford and has a strong commitment to improving the community. We believe serving on the Rockford City Council for the last four years has allowed him to forge positive working relationships with fellow council members both Republican and Democrat, and independent. Having served on the Council has given Tom a unique perspective on how to communicate effectively with aldermen and city staff to get things done. While there are challenges ahead, there is strong momentum for the city. Our central city has seen tremendous progress in commercial development and that must continue not only downtown but through redevelopment or infill in historic neighborhoods and commercial districts throughout the community. The city will continue to face serious challenges regarding its budget and crime. Tom McNamara has pledged to engage citizens and other stakeholders to address these problems. He wants more collaboration with area local government leaders and already enjoys a positive working relationship with Winnebago County Board Chairman Frank Haney. Cooperation between the city and county as well as other local jurisdictions is critical to the success of our region. We believe there is great potential for Tom McNamara to be a successful Mayor. We hope that a McNamara administration will accelerate the pace of our community’s transformation. The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC intends to be supportive in helping our next Mayor achieve the community’s vision.

Rockford PAC announces First Endorsement for the April 4th Election
March 14, 2017
Rockford: The Rockford Regional Good Government PAC is announcing their endorsement for the 7th Ward in Rockford. The election will be held on April 4, 2017 in the consolidated election. Candidates submitted questionnaires and participated in an interview process. Voting records and other public information were utilized in a very thorough process.
The following candidate is endorsed:
Bryant Moore (I) for Rockford City Council, 7th Ward. The 7th Ward which encompasses some of the northwest neighborhoods of Rockford has been under the same leadership for almost two decades. While there have been some accomplishments, there is room for a lot more to be done. Bryant Moore, an Independent candidate, can bring fresh new ideas and leadership. As a public school teacher, Bryant has done his homework and has a keen understanding of the needs in the 7th Ward. The 7th Ward has some of the highest unemployment rates and most unsafe neighborhoods in the community. Bryant understands that you have to address these issues with economic development initiatives that create job opportunities, education and skills training for youth and young adults as well as mobilizing the citizens to make their community safe.
The following candidates are endorsed:
Frank Haney (R) for Winnebago County Board Chairman. Since announcing and being nominated for the Chairman race, Frank has worked extremely hard to become one of the most prepared candidates for Chairman in recent history by researching best government practices, introducing comprehensive reform plans and running a strong inclusive campaign. Frank is strongly endorsed.
Fred Wescott (R) for Winnebago County Board District 17. A veteran of the county board, Fred still exhibits a strong passion and vision to improve our community. Fred is a supporter of revitalizing downtown Rockford, which will provide enjoyment and economic development for all of Winnebago County citizens, while also serving as a good steward of taxpayers’ dollars.
Dan Fellars (D) for Winnebago County Board District 19. A technology expert, Dan demonstrates a keen vision for enhancing our region’s attractiveness as a place to live, work, and play. We believe that his extensive management and start-up skills will help him to accomplish great things within county government.
Note: The board chose not to make an endorsement in the County Board District 11 race.
“In determining our picks for endorsement we focused on the individual candidate’s alignment with our “Mission Statement” and “Our Values Statement”. Our members serve on this board on a voluntary basis and that reflects our commitment to “Good Government”. Whether paid or not, elected officials should have the same commitment to community and good government. Public service is not a right, it is a privilege,” said Maurice West II, Board Member.
